Torts is that area of law which is most often coupled with occurrences involving personal injuries and/or property damage. The greatest body of tort litigation are automobile collisions. However, like jelly beans, torts come in many flavors and sizes. There are unintentional torts most commonly referred to as accidents, and intentional torts which are often synonymous with crimes, such as battery, assault, trespass, and the like. The course taught by Paul Casbarian emphasizes the practical aspects of tort law and include, to a degree, the litigation process. The paralegal student will receive some instruction in the preparation of documents used in lawsuits. The student will also utilize the Illinois Code of Civil Procedure and the Illinois Supreme Court Rules, The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and local court rules for both the U. S. District Court and Illinois Circuit Courts to better understand torts within the litigation process. A strong background in the Introduction to Paralegal Studies course at Harper is recommended as the student will only receive a cursory review of the inter-relationship among the various areas of law, the Federal and State Court systems, legal research, and legal terminology.
