MANDATORY ARBITRATION ASSIGNMENT

As a part of the course you will be required to attend a mandatory arbitration hearing.  The choice of Court you attend and the day of attendance is strictly up to you.  All of the Courts in Illinois, including the outlying Cook County Districts, have mandatory arbitration, and you may attend any one.  You need only attend one hearing, no matter how short or long.  However, experience has shown that most students enjoy the experience so much they stick around for more.

To minimize confusion, remember, you may attend an arbitration hearing anytime between the beginning of the semester and the final exam and turn in your summary anytime between the beginning of the semester and the final exam, turned in during class, emailed, or faxed.

You must submit a summary which includes, when, what court, where, the case name (if possible), what the case was about, what you saw or heard that was interesting or new to you, and what you saw or heard that gave you pause to question our court system or the way cases are handled or the way attorneys handle cases.  You can throw in any other matters of interest as well.

It is suggested that you call the clerk handling mandatory arbitration in the outlying Cook County district courthouses or other counties as they often only have a few per day and they are subject to settlement or other matters which may mean cases are not heard.  You can also find out the times for hearings.  With respect to Cook County hearings downtown are at 222 N. LaSalle, 13th floor, and are heard at 8:30, 10:00 and 2:00.  As there are numerous cases handled each day there should be no problem observing.

Arbitration alternative:  for those of you who absolutely could not and cannot go to an arbitration hearing I am looking into an alternative.  It is not an alternative if you can go to arbitration, and you must have my prior approval.

EXTRA CREDIT-BUT STRONGLY ADVISED

TOUR OF CLERK OF THE CIRCUIT COURT OF COOK COUNTY.  ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2008 AND DECEMBER 11, 2008 THERE WILL BE A TOUR OF THE CLERK'S OFFICE.   THE TOUR STARTS AT 9:00 A.M. WITH ALL INTERESTED PERSONS MEETING ON THE 10TH FLOOR OF THE DALEY CENTER AT RANDOLPH AND CLARK STREETS, CHICAGO.  DO NOT BE LATE AT THERE IS A SHORT INTRODUCTION BEFORE HAND AND THEN THE TOUR IS BROKEN UP INTO SMALLER GROUPS WHICH GO TO DIFFERENT STARTING OFFICES AROUND THE COURTHOUSE. THE TOURS ARE OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND THERE IS A SIGN IN SHEET.  PUT YOUR NAME AND HARPER COLLEGE.

EXTRA CREDIT WILL ALSO BE GIVEN FOR ATTENDING THE SYMPOSIUM AT HARPER ON OCTOBER 11.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WOULD LIKE ANOTHER DAY, UNFORTUNATELY THE CLERK'S TOURS ARE ALWAYS ON A THURSDAY.  IT'S ROUGH FOR ME AS WELL AS MY CLASSES USUALLY FALL ON THURSDAY.

STILL HAVING WESTLAW ISSUES?  CALL THE HELP DESK AT 847-925-6090.

Remember to occasionally check the General Information Pages as I often post notices which are for all classes I teach rather than a specific class.
